Oh my goodness! A friend and I stopped by this tiny convenience store in the mountains of South Carolina. There was a bulletin board by the door simply plastered in Polaroids of terminated turkeys and deceased deer. Each photo was labeled with the animal's size and the hunter's name. This was also the store where we saw the KKK bumper sticker. Sketchy....

A true "turkey shoot" is not hunting. It's a target competition with a turkey as the prize. It sounds like you stumbled into something else...

I like this definition, skipvia. I've heard, though, the term "turkey shoot" used conversationally over the years to indicate something akin to spearing fish in a barrel or taking candy from a baby. (Why a baby would have candy in the first place is beyond me, but...)
I can imagine, given this definition, how that usage of "turkey shoot" might be wrong, but does anyone else hear the phrase used this way?

There's actually a web site devoted to the competition aspect of the sport. The Shooting House list is fun to peruse. North Carolina seems to be the hotbed of the sport, with Tennessee a close second.
